Photos: Why Don’t We – 03/29/18

This is a hella late post, and I apologize! Things have been crazy with adjusting to my new work schedule and balancing my travels/social life with it.

BUT! Here is my blog post about the Why Don’t We concert back at the end of March. I know what you’re thinking — they’re just a bunch of teenage pretty boys. Yes, yes they are. However, I like to invest in fledgling groups like this. Continue reading “Photos: Why Don’t We – 03/29/18”

Photos: We Came As Romans – 03/23/18

Recently, I saw We Came As Romans headline their Cold Like War tour, and they came to Houston at Scout Bar. The band has been a mainstay of mine since… 2011? I last saw them this past November, but they were an opening band, which was strange to see to be honest, with a much shorter set list.

I randomly came across We Came As Romans at South by Southwest in Austin. My best friend/partner and I had a break between filming interviews with bands, so we decided to hit up a showcase with a lineup of bands we loved from our punk/emo scene. Little did we know that we’d fall in love with WCAR. Well, it happened, and as fate would have it, we were assigned to cover a festival in Houston–right after the crazy week at SXSW–which WCAR was playing. Fast forward to the Take Action tour where we interviewed Kyle Pavone, Andy Glass and Dave Stephens from the band, and I was ecstatic, glowing with anticipation and excitement hiding underneath professionalism (video below).

Anyway, this show at Scout Bar was a CHALLENGE. There was no photo barrier AND We Came As Romans decided to present a dark toned ambience with flashing colored lights, which I had to capture the perfect moments of them performing. And these guys don’t sit still, either–another thing to tackle. Nevertheless I did my best to maneuver and predict good opportunities to click the shutter button.

Here’s my review for Music Connection magazine of the band’s performance:

We Came As Romans has managed to stay in my ears’ airwaves–especially with their new album, Cold Like War, which sounds phenomenal, by the way. It really was the facelift of sound they needed that didn’t quite take off with their previous self-titled album.

Anxieties of Photographing Concerts

**All photos are my own.

Going to concerts is always a ton of fun. Ever since I moved to Austin, TX for college in 2009, concerts have been my way of going out—not the… go out to Sixth Street and get shit-faced drunk and/or get hit on or groped by disgusting creeps. At least once a week I would go out to venues in downtown Austin (and eventually venturing out to Dallas and San Antonio) and see bands and artists I loved—shoutout to my first legit concert at La Zona Rosa to see All Time Low!

All Time Low at La Zona Rosa, Austin, TX

Fast forward to 2011 when one of my best friends invited me to help film an interview and acoustic session for an online publication in New York, Rock Edition. Soon after that, the editor asked me to join their staff photographer and videographer team, and from that day forward, I have been photographing concerts and festivals for publications. Now… I don’t claim to be the most talented ace photographer—I still consider myself an amateur—but I will say that I have seen and dealt with a lot. This blog post is going to discuss the main anxious thoughts and feelings I get when I go to photograph live shows.

Photos: The Neighbourhood – 12/8/17

It’s been a few years since I last saw the band The Neighbourhood live in concert–to be more exact… it was 2014 at a small South by Southwest showcase. I had never seen them before that but knew of them because of their hit radio song, “Sweater Weather,” but one of my friends was a big fan and wanted to get to the venue hella early, which we ended up getting front row in a tiny place.
